Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
