Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
