Team Principal Wolff has guided Mercedes to record-breaking achievements in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction estimates Mercedes at £4.6bn – a record for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns a 33% stake of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports film to date.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is fourth in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
